02 | 25 | 09 > SORRY FOR THE DELAY. LET'S CATCH UP.
I apologize for the delay in updates, but I had to leave town for a while, and was unable to update this site last Wednesday. Sadly, my grandmother passed away around Valentine's Day, and I had to go down to Athens, Georgia for the funeral. She was a great grandmother, I loved her very much and I will miss her.
While I was down south, I took some time to visit with my family in the Atlanta area. I'm originally from that part of the country, and no matter how long I've been away, I feel a real connection to the place when I go back there. I miss sweet tea, red clay, the familiar accent, and seeing a Waffle House every ten minutes, no matter where you are going.
Anyway, I'm back now and playing a lot of catch up. I had a lot of things moving before I got the sad news, and was away from the middle west headquarters. There were no updates last week, but I've tried to make up for it.
The daily drawings in my 4x6x365 '09 series are up to date and ready for inspection. You can see the whole mass of them starting with this one from way, way back.
I've also updated the Picture of The Week and Link of The Week. There are even entries for the week we missed. Under casual inspection, it would seem like there was no lapse, but you and I know better.
Finally, before I sign off, I'd like to mention a few opportunities for you all to come out and check my work out offline.
I've heard from Mr. Roberts from Mostly Gallery in Chicago, that a show has been locked down for March 28. It's a group show and sounds like it should be fun. I will get more details to you all as I get them.
My solo show at Fly Bird in Oak Park is still on, and there will be a grand opening party April 25. I'm planning a lot of really cool things for this show, and again, as the details become more solid, I'll pass them on.
We'll also be at this year's Constructor in May, and you have to come out to Berwyn for that. It seems to be the best place to get my t-shirts and toys. You know, the ones I keep mentioning, but have yet to get my act together and have them up for sale here on the website. Granted, I'm hoping to fix that soon.
Well, that is it for now. Be seeing you.
02 | 151 | 09 > NO UPDATE THIS WEEK
There will be no weekly updates this Wednesday, but come back Wednesday, February 25 when the updates return.
02 | 11 | 09 > HERE BE UPDATES
I've had a frustrating past few days, so I'm going to keep this brief. It is probably for the best, my writing skills are pretty lousy tonight.
First up, seven new drawings have been added to my 4x6x365 '09 series. Check them out, starting with the first one here.
I've also updated the Picture of The Week and Link of The Week. Hooray!
Before I head out, I have a more solid, official date for the opening of my show at Fly Bird in Oak Park. Plan to be there Saturday, April 25 from 7-10pm. It should be a really cool show, so mark it down on your calendar.
Well, that is it for now. See you next week.
02 | 08 | 09 > IS BEING RIPPED OFF IS THE MOST SINCERE FORM OF FLATTERY?
I was up late Friday night designing hangtags for a new batch of Diabolical Hot Dog t-shirts that should be back in stock in the next couple weeks, when I decided to take a little break and take a stroll around online. I'm not sure how I ended up on Archie McPhee's blog, but I was shocked when I came across this entry.
Something about that character on the left, that Captain Corndog, that wiener with the eye patch struck me as very familiar. Oh, that's right, it looks a lot like it was inspired by Diabolical Hot Dog, a character I first scrawled on paper back in aught four, and who've I been working on and developing every since.
He has graced all manner of Nerfect products and a design featuring the character was lucky to be chosen to be printed by Threadless back in 2005. That was great exposure and the Diabolical Hot Dog stickers and buttons have always done very well. People really respond to my character, and there have been many suggestions that I get a toy made of him. Over the years, I have made several serious efforts to make this happen, but Friday night, I discovered someone beat me to the punch by going down the cheap knock-off route.
Now, I'm not that upset that the character idea got copied, I'm more miffed that they didn't have the class to drop me a line and ask if I would be interested in teaming up with them in order to bring out the ultimate Diabolical Hot Dog figure. I would have totally jumped at the chance, but now I just feel ripped off.
Is this what flattery feels like? Man, it sucks.
02 | 04 | 09 > I'M HAVING A PARTY AND I'D LIKE TO INVITE YOUR ZIPPER DOWN
Okay, I'm not really having a party, but I would like to invite you to unzip with our new Zippy Pullies. Featuring artwork of either Diabolical Hot Dog or Nice Trick, these handy items attach to a zipper and add a bit of Nerfectness while making it easier to unzip.
If you've broken a zipper or want to add a bit of something extra to your boring winter coat or book bag, you should really check them out.
You should also check out the latest drawings in my 4x6x365 '09 series. It's a pretty handsome group this week and I hope you dig them.
If that wasn't enough, I have also updated my Picture of The Week and Link of The Week. If you're making a "To Dig" list, please add these two items.
Finally, I'd like you all to mark you calendars and start planning your trips to Oak Park, Illinois. My show at Fly-Bird is moving forward and will be running most of April and a bit into May. I'll get more solid details to you all soon, but there will be an opening either the third or fourth and probably way too much Mr. Walters artwork up for display and (ahem) purchase.
I'm planning to have a good range of stuff from paintings and drawings to prints and sculptures at the show. I'm really excited about it and I hope I can count on all my loyal pals to check it out, especially after I give you folks a few more fine details. For now, just mark out all of April on your schedule and plan on coming out to historic Oak Park.
Well, that is it for now. See y'all later.
