With my sketch in hand, I went to my local hardware store to get some paint. I couldn 't find exact matches to my original colors in the paint chips, so I picked some new colors that worked well together. In the end, they worked out a lot better than my original ones. They 're still various blues, but they not exactly the same as in the sketch.

After asking a bunch of questions, I settled on getting the color mixed in an acrylic exterior paint with a satin finish. After getting the paint mixed, I headed home to lay down the first coat.

Knowing that there might be a few spots here and there where the paint wouldn 't coat evenly, I decided to paint the entire horse with a primary coat of the lightest blue. That way, each other color would build off of that base.

I rolled and brushed on this first color and got the whole thing covered pretty solidly with a couple coats. A few shots of this step follow.
